Freedom from the Voices of Our Past.

Updated: Jan 12, 2021

People’s words impact us, and ours them.

Words have incredible power… in the moment and sometimes for much longer.

There are voices that our brain holds on to, and sometimes these voices get put on “repeat”, so we hear them over and over again.

This is a great thing if the voices in your life have been encouraging and uplifting.

It’s a brutal thing if the words and voices that have spoken into you have been belittling, critical, or even abusive.

Many people remain stuck in an unhealthy mindset because the voices of their past are dictating their life.

That thing their dad said to them when they were 6 never faded from their memory, and they hold on to it.

Those names their classmates called them 20 years ago has been a label they’ve allowed to stick to them.

The belittling comments made in one relationship has wounded them, and now they carry these words into every relationship they get into.

Voices from our past can keep us stuck, and keep us from living out life fully.

But.. freedom is possible.

You don’t have to keep living with the voices of your past being your compass pointing towards where you go in the future.

You don’t need to keep reliving similar experiences in relationships that are unhealthy and destructive.

There is freedom from the past. But it requires a change in thinking, and allowing the truth of God to have room in your heart.

You need to start by understanding that the voice of God would never sound like the cruel or shaming voices of your past. So the things you are hearing, are not from Him.

It’s time to go back to those old voices and start telling them off.

They don’t get to run the show anymore.

You aren’t worthless. You aren’t stupid. You aren’t unlovable. You aren’t too much or not enough.

These things are NOT your identity. Even if you have been believing these things for years.

If God doesn’t think this about you, it’s not true. He holds the truth. No one else does.

So friend, allow yourself to really listen to what God thinks.

He calls you chosen. His beloved. His child. His masterpiece. His plan. His love. His idea.

Allow His voice to become the voice you listen to.

I know it’s not easy, and it’s a process, but it’s time to stop giving power to the voices of your past.

They have been a tool the enemy has been using to get you to believe lies.

No matter how long its been, you can find freedom from those voices.

It’s starts by allowing God’s voice to be the one you pay most attention to, and let His truths sink so deeply into your heart that the other voices get drowned out.
