Over and Over, God Pulls us Out When we’re Drowning

Updated: May 15, 2020

Drowning. Overwhelmed. Exhausted.

Sometimes life makes it hard to breathe.

There is too much going on and we can feel sucked into it all.

It’s so easy to let the waves take you.

It’s so easy to agree with the lie that this isn’t going to get better and there is no hope in this situation.

And so we find ourselves feeling like we are drowning, being tossed with the waves of life.

I’ve been there. Sometimes I still go there.

But I’ve also learned something about God through scripture and through experience.

He is always lifting us up.

He is pulling us out.

He is always rescuing us.

It says it all over the Bible. Here is just a few:

But You, O Lord, are a shield about me,

My glory, and the One who lifts my head.

Psalm 3:3

He lifted me out of the ditch, pulled me from deep mud. He stood me up on a solid rock to make sure I wouldn't slip.

Psalm 40:2

He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters.

Psalm 18:16

He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay,

And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.

Psalm 40:2

You who have shown me many troubles and distresses, Will revive me again,

And will bring me up again from the depths of the earth.

Psalm 71:20

The people writing these Psalms (like King David) were not living a comfortable, easy life.

They were lamenting. They were in grief. They were struggling and fighting for their life.

Yet, they keep talking about how God pulls them out.

Pulling us out does not mean that He makes all the hardships go away in our life.

It means He won’t let our circumstances ruin us.

He pulls us out, so we can see clearer.

He pulls us out, so we can look at things from a different perspective.

He pulls us out, so we can reside in Him, rather than in all that’s going on around us.

It’s quite beautiful.

That the God of the universe is the same God who personally rescues you and me.

Over and over.

By pulling us out.
